Giant German Wind Turbine

If there was a HAWTaction meter, alternate energy development would pin it to the max.  There was a post a while back that talked about some sassy things happening in Spain.  Now it's Germany who's kickin' it, green style.  This is a wind turbine unlike any other you've seen.... because it's the first of its kind to be seen.

Largest_Wind_Turbine_6.jpgI left the photo huge because this turbine is a giant.  A total giant.  Those things at the base of it?  They are trucks.  But, it's more than just a wind turbine on growth hormone...
See, the normal "windmill" provides nesting spots for birds, and then (inevitably) they get to know those blades intimately.  Somehow, on this giant, they make it completely bird un-friendly, so there will be no nesting in that guy.  I don't see any details in how they did it, but I'm assuming it involves a giant, remote-controlled, bird-eating hawk.  What I do know, though, is they can't make a claim like that if it isn't serious.... PETA (et al.) would be down their throats before the cranes even got to the construction site.

In addition, these blades have a new design to maximize the absorption of wind.

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.  What does that all mean?  I means that this behemoth's capacity is 7 megawatts.  That's enough to cover 5,000 average German households (4 people).  With one tower!?!?  Stuff like that is so HAWT to me.  Why don't we put up fields of these?  WHY NOT?!?!  Let's make it happen!

It bothers me that none of these sassy projects are in the U.S.  What is wrong with us?  Granted, given our higher usage of power, this tower would only cover ~1,800 U.S. households, it's still great.  Less fossil fuels!  Clean energy!  Renewable energy!  Oh, mama.

Let me quote myself from the Spain post I referenced earlier:

'[The U.S. is] so far behind in this "alternate" energy exploration that we are only thinking of the magic bullet... not smaller projects like these that will, cumulatively, probably save our asses.'
Instead of doing projects like this, the U.S. is trying to figure out how to convince the world there's a way to have "Clean" burning of coal.  Ugh.

Giant German wind turbine?  HAWT action [hot ak-shuhn].
