Tall Building: Chicago Aqua Tower

| | Comments (1) | | | |
I'm way into big buildings.  They do a lot more for a city's character and future than most people recognize.  So, I think it's HAWTaction [hot ak-shuhn] to keep tabs on new projects like the Nakheel Harbour and Tower, Bahrain WTC, Honeycomb SkyscraperBurj Dubai... in Dubai... in Pictures, CCTV and TVCC Towers, Tokyo Sky Tree, Burj Dubai (Revisited), Dancing Towers, Dynamic Tower, Dubai Towers, The Lighthouse (Paris), The Lighthouse (Dubai), Antilla, London's Super Tower, Eiffel Tower, Shuffle Tower, Full Moon, Caspian Bay, Chicago Spire, Chicago's Aqua Tower, Infinity Tower, Teardrop, Christmas Tree or the Burj Dubai.

Aqua.jpgNow, THAT's what I'm talking about.  Again, this series, Tall Building, aims to highlight sassy construction.  It's easy to put up a glass rectangle or a brick block with some windows in it, so when a developer spends the time to hire an architect and says, "Make it sassy," I bow down.

This building, the Aqua Tower, takes us back to Chicago, and it's sassy as all get out.  I mean, look at that thing!  Construction broke almost a year ago and will completed next year, bringing 1.9 million square feet to Chicago.  The breakdown: 210 hotels rooms (floors 1-18), 476 rental residential units (floors 19-52), and 263 condominium units & penthouses (floors 53-80).
The building will cost $300 million to make (which seems low to me).  It was designed by Jeanne Gang, founder of architecture firm Studio Gang, to resemble waves in the ocean.  Mission accomplished.  By the way, each of those "curls" is a balcony, which means each unit will have a unique one.  Check out another computer-generated photo:

Aqua 2.jpgBetween this and the Chicago Spire, I love what's happening in the windy city!   My goodness!  This is some HAWT action [hot ak-shuhn]!

Here's one more, ground level, so you can see the waves better.
