TV RCMNDTN: Mad Men

Sometimes there are TV shows that are really, really good that few people watch, and I feel compelled to draw attention to them.  Now I have a blog to power that drawing.  I drew attention to Arrested Development sans-blog and it, single-handed, pushed the show's canceling back by about 4 minutes, which is like a year in TV time.

amc?  American Movie Classics?  You might recognize them from such movies as The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit, The China Syndrome, Witness and Million Dollar Baby.  I mean, they don't mess around.  So, when they announced that they were going to be doing original broadcasting last year, the industry sat back to see if they were going to pull "an HBO" and set a high bar they'll all have to jump over.

MM_wallpaper02_1024x768_01.jpgThe bar really can't get higher.
Mad Men is a term created by Madison Avenue advertising executives in the 1960's in NYC to describe themselves.  The show will suck you into the TV and rip you back 40 years.  Every shot, interior or exterior, honestly represents 1960's style.  It's really an amazing feat: Costumes, music, smoking, sexism, racism... it's accurate, raw, honest and unrelenting.  The characters are flawed and their egos barely fit in the recreated world.  It's f'ing awesome.

The show was created by a Sopranos writer, and that haute sophistication bleeds through every part of the show.  The second season starts on Sunday, and lucky for you, amc wants you onboard.  They have the entire first season on demand on all cable channels.  For free.  Check out what channel it's on here.

As you get through those first 12 episodes, you'll realize why this show got 16 Emmy Nominations, the most for any drama series, including best show and best actor.  It also won the Golden Globe for best TV drama and best actor in a drama this year.  Hit up the free on-demand and join the rest of us on Sunday night for the second season.

Mad Men is some HAWT action [hot ak-shuhn].

It's hard to watch this show because they men are so hot. I would have blended right in with the 1960's advertising community.

I'm the best blogger, ever.

Sounds great.

Since past TV Recommendations have proven so spot on, I'll make sure to check this one out.

Heroes on HD-DVD was amazing.

Getting LOST on Netflix per HawtAction.com. Arrested Development? I own all the season on DVD, thanks to HawtAction.com

John---you need to stop recommending all of this outstanding content. A guy needs to sleep sometimes!

Another thing I love about this show is that stories evolve throughout the entire series. You don't get a neat bow at the end of every hour like all those medical shows (ER, House) or law/detective (Law & Order, Law & Order SVU, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: NYC, Cold Case, NCIS, Criminal Minds, Closer, Savings Grace, NUMB3RS, Bones and Without a Trace).

Holy crap, we need some diversity.

Thanks, AMC.
