The Volcano Stadium
Architecture is just getting sassier and sassier. People like Calatrava, Herzog & de Meuron, Hadid, Gehry, Piano and Koolhaas have set a new standard. Beyond functional and beautiful, the building, itself, can be the reason someone visits the building. Heck, the bulding can even give a new lifeline to its city... check the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain or the Milwaukee Art Museum in Milwaukee.
This level of sophistication has reached international sporting stadiums. For some reason the two new baseball stadiums in NYC aren't doing anything "special." Internationally, though? Look at the Olympic Bird's Nest or Allianz Arena in Germany. And now... we have... Mexico’s Club Deportivo Guadalajara. Designed by the french architect company Massaud, this is the Volcano Stadium.
Awwwwwwww, yeah. There's a stadium in there. What happens when you walk through one of those little slots at the bottom of the "volcano?"

Boooooooya!

That is hidden in the grass-covered slopes of the volcano. It's odd because this computer-render of the stadium has white seats, but I've read the seats will be lava red... in keeping with the theme, you know.
Key to the building's function is the "cloud" above the volcano. Made of fabric, it protects the patrons from the elements. It will also act as a projection screen where advertisements will be broadcast. It's supported by extremely thin columns (it's quite light), that make the cloud look like it's floating over this green volcano.
This complex will cost about $100 million, and will not only have a stadium, but a restaurant, museum, 2 stores, a hairdresser (no joke), theater, skateboard park, 50 beverage stations and parking structure with capacity for 750 cars. It will seat 42,250 attendees with 340 suites and a Chivas club with 500 spots. One of those spots will be mine.
Now, I know soccer/futbol isn't quite popular in Mexico, so I hope this stadium brings the sport some popularity to the beautiful sport down there. Guadalajara's getting a gem.

I can't wait to catch a game, snag a meal, get a haircut and perform some half-pipe tricks. Finally... all in one place.
