Tall Building: Nakheel Harbour and Tower
I'm way into big buildings. They do a lot more for a city's character and future than most people recognize. So, I think it's HAWTaction [hot ak-shuh
n] to keep tabs on new projects like the Nakheel Harbour and Tower, Bahrain WTC, Honeycomb Skyscraper, Burj Dubai... in Dubai... in Pictures, CCTV and TVCC Towers, Tokyo Sky Tree, Burj Dubai (Revisited), Dancing Towers, Dynamic Tower, Dubai Towers, The Lighthouse (Paris), The Lighthouse (Dubai), Antilla, London's Super Tower, Eiffel Tower, Shuffle Tower, Full Moon, Caspian Bay, Chicago Spire, Chicago's Aqua Tower, Infinity Tower, Teardrop, Christmas Tree or the Burj Dubai.
By far, the most popular post on HAWTaction is the first Tall Building post: Tall Building: The Burj Dubai.... in Dubai. By far. I guess there is a global curiosity about the tallest structure in the world. How could there not be?
Well, step aside Burj Dubai, because the city of Dubai is about to steal... the city of Dubai's thunder with the Nakheel Harbour and Tower. While the Burj Dubai's final height is unknown, it is expected to be around 818 meters (2,684 feet). They could possible stretch it an additional few meters with their antenna. No matter how many meters they squeeze out of it, though, it's got nothing on this new Nakheel Harbour and Tower. This sucker's going to be over a kilometer tall. Over 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) tall.
Holy. Moly.
That beast will stretch almost 20% taller than the Burj Dubai. Let me put it another way. If you stack two Empire State Buildings on two Statue of Liberties to juuuuust hit the height of the Nakheel Tower. Two Empire State Buildings and two Statue of Liberties for 1 Nakheel Tower.
Holy moly.

The project is much more than just a kilometer high building. Stretching for 270 hectares (667 acres), the development also plans to include homes for more than 55,000 people (a decent-sized town), a workplace for 45,000 (a decent-sized town) more and attract millions of visitors each year (a decent-sized city).
The developer, Nakheel, admits that the Burj Dubai was inspiration in its use of Islamic themes in its design. The architects, Woods Bagot, admit they found inspiration in "the gardens of Alhambra in Spain, the harbor of Alexandria in Egypt,
the promenade of Tangier in Morocco and the bridges of Isfahan in Iran."
There aren't many details about the project yet outside of its amazing size, as it was just announced this past weekend, but the numbers are still awe-inspiring. This complex will bring 250,000 square meters of hotels and hospitality space (2.7 million square feet), 100,000 m2 of retail space (1.1 million square feet) and huge expanses of green spaces including canal walks, parks and landscaping.
The complex will also have the world's first inner-city harbor, which requires some explanation... and I can't find that explanation... so, let your imaginations go wild, you ten loyal readers.
The only other fact I can glean off the press release is that the tower is actually made up of four towers linked together along the climb up. Here's another shot. (Night shot!)
You can be sure that we will be following the construction of this behemoth.
Holy moly.
