Breathe in the Cocaine
A while back, we had a HAWT post about how Money is Very Dirty. Now, this wasn't dirt, dust or mud on the bills... This was trace cocaine. Seriously. Check out that HAWT article. Then start favoring your credit card.
Well, the hunt for drugs progresses. Forget surfaces, let's check the air! A new technique has been developed that finds airborne drugs. Airborne drugs, an urban pollen. This was put to test in two Spanish cities: Madrid and Barcelona.

Obviously, they found something, or HAWT wouldn't be reporting on it.

(That's Madrid's central post office.)

The test looks for 17 indicators that are found in 5 common drugs. The readings from Madrid and Barcelona indicated that there is cocaine in the air, at concentrations of 29 to 850 picograms per cubic meter of air. Ok. A picogram is a trillionth of a gram, so the concentrations aren't enough that you'll get high. In fact, you could breathe this air for hundreds of years, and the accumulation isn't enough to get you high once, but it's still interesting to HAWT.
Why so interested? Granted, scientists tested areas known for drug distribution, but still! It's not like cocaine dealers hang the cocaine out to dry, like laundry. They don't flaunt it. It's not like they store it outside like manure. Cocaine, from what I'd imagine, is hidden away and kept out of sight. Yet enough escapes in every day stealth-usage that it becomes airborne. My goodness.
The team tested the area throughout the week and found that concentrations rose during the weekend... which you'd expect.
Oh, and in Madrid they found heroin airborne as well. Given the current fútbol season, maybe Madrid has finally found something to brag about. In the game of airborne drugs, they are up 2-1.
Now do me a favor and set this thing up in Manhattan. I'll take bets on neighborhoods. It's not even odds for Financial District and Tribeca.
