Tall Building: The Shard

| | Comments (0) | | | |
I'm way into big buildings.  They do a lot more for a city's character and future than most people recognize.  So, I think it's HAWTaction [hot ak-shuhn] to keep tabs on new projects like the 56 Leonard St., Archipelago 21, Dancing Tower (Kuwait), Tall Building Update, City of Silk, Shanghai Tower, Russia Tower, Anara Tower, Okhta Tower, Nakheel Harbour and Tower, Bahrain WTC, Honeycomb SkyscraperBurj Dubai... in Dubai... in Pictures, CCTV and TVCC Towers, Tokyo Sky Tree, Burj Dubai (Revisited), Dancing Towers, Dynamic Tower, Dubai Towers, The Lighthouse (Paris), The Lighthouse (Dubai), Antilla, London's Super Tower, Eiffel Tower, Shuffle Tower, Full Moon, Caspian Bay, Chicago Spire, Chicago's Aqua Tower, Infinity Tower, Teardrop, Christmas Tree or the Burj Dubai.

I remember a time when Tall Building posts were weekly occurrences, with glorious, dream-like buildings usually promising to pop up in Dubai or Bahrain.  I look back fondly at a series that is now crippled... whose better days are behind it - better days with booming economies that allowed architectural imaginations to explode.

But, wait... what is this?  What do I see coming around the corner?  Is this a new building coming to London?  Why, I think it is!  This is a worthy shot in the arm to this aged series.  This, readers, is The Shard.

46TheShard_pic8.jpg
(It's the tall one... on the left.)

It's a little building by Renzo Piano, the Italian architect who gave us the new New York Times Building in NYC.  (He is relatively new to the skyscraper game.)  I must say, the Shard is a leap forward from the not-entirely-pleasant NYT building I'm staring at right now.

Let's pop the roof off the Shard and see what we can find.

There was a glut of Tall Building posts last year, when the economy was still bloated like a Crumbs cupcake.  Lately, it's been a Tall Building desert.  HAWT has had to dive through any and all architecture news to find a structure (any structure) to report on.  It has been pathetic... and we at HAWT expect Obama to refill our cup by passing a $100,459 trillion billion stimulus package to bring back sassy architecture projects.

Well, I was slipping through buildings coming to NYC, and I found some gems I hadn't before discovered.  Like this.  This is a building coming to 56 Leonard St.

652655.jpgSure, that doesn't look like much.  Boring, right?  But wait until we step closer.

The second Tall Building post, back when we were doing one a week during a construction BONANZA?  It presented the Teardrop, a beautiful building in South Korea.  Back then, the city's plan was to use the Teardrop as the focus in a multi-acre development that would redefine the Yongsan financial district of Seoul.  The original price tag was a whopping $31 billion.  Since then, the economy has changed... and so has the plan.

Enter Daniel Libeskind, the architect responsible for the new World Trade Center in NYC.  Libeskind has just been chosen to run the restructure of the Seoul district with a new design that leaves the Teardrop forever on the sketch board.  * tear *  This is Libeskind's plan:

libeskind-seoul-584.jpgThat sucker is a $20 billion, 34-million-square-foot riverfront project... Libeskind style.

Wow.  There is an oasis in this Tall Building desert, and it's coming from Kuwait City.  What is the oil money building there?  Well, it's a meager $160 million building called the Dancing Tower:

Dancing Tower.jpgMe liiiiiiiiiiiike-y.  That is some sass.

Now, don't confuse this with the Dancing Towers in Dubai; this is a new project with a shortage of creativity in its naming.  Not much information has been released about the project, but the Tall Building series is insisting I reach out and embrace this oasis with an air-tight bear hug.  Let's take a look.

Tall Building: Update

A year ago, I couldn't get enough Tall Building posts out to you guys.  Everyone was shooting up a tower of the highest architectural aesthetic and mind-boggling design.  We saw buildings that rotated as they got taller, skyscrapers with no steel frame and absolute monsters of height.  Well, it isn't a coincidence that as the global economy has dried up, the Tall Building industry's momentum has fallen off the charts.

Yesterday one of these Tall Buildings went up in flames, and I thought it appropriate to check in on our favorite series.  The building that exploded with fire was part of the Media Park in Beijing, with the CCTV and TVCC Towers:

cctv nightview_final_451x329x90.jpgWhat burned down was the building on the left, the CCTV, home of a flagship Mandarin Oriental hotel.  Here's a video of what that looked like.

There are Tall Building posts, then... there.... are.... TALL BUILDING posts.  This is one of those all-caps, tell-your-friends, what-the-hell-are-they-building bonanza posts.  We aren't just talking about a building in Kuwait.  We're talking about an entire city being built in Kuwait, and its crowning jewel will just so happen to be the tallest building in the world.  This is Kuwait's City of Silk.

Business_City_CGI.jpgNow, it's a lot to wrap your eyes around, and I think that's the point.  It will sit across the Kuwait Bay from from the capital, Kuwait City, and spread over an amazing 250 square kilometers (97 square miles) with 25 neighborhoods and a 23.5 kilometer bridge (14.6 miles) leading to Kuwait City.  The bridge will cut the commute to the capital to twenty minutes from over an hour and a half.

This will be a full city, accommodating 700,000 people.  Unlike anything in the Arab world (that I've seen) it's also going to designed to be "in tune" with nature.  Oh, and it'll have the tallest building in the world... so we're interested.  You?

Just when I think it's time for a Tall Building post, I read Gizmodo, and a Tall Building smacks me in the face.  And then I research, cheer and post.  Who-haw!  Just, what, smacked me in the face?  This is the Shanghai Tower, coming to... Shanghai.

Shanghai Tower.jpgIn the photo you see two other buildings, each sassy in their own right.  They broke ground on the Shanghai Tower last weekend, and when completed, in 2014, it's going to be a staggering 632 meters (2,073 feet), making it the tallest building in China.  It's, honestly, got so much sass, it might be pulling some from that (kind of disappointing) Russia Tower.

I've got photos a go-go.

Russia has come up in Tall Buildings twice before: Christmas Tree and Okhta Tower.  They seem to have the most money to play with if you ignore Dubai's building bonanza.  September, 2007, ground broke on a structure simply called: Russia Tower.

RussiaTower-render.jpgMeh.  I hear you.  I'm not crazy about it, either, but that's just not a flattering angle.  Maybe it's what inside that counts?  Let's jump around and take a closer look.

Tall Building: Anara Tower

I get a tingle in my nether regions every time I find a new Tall Building post, because these buildings pretty much kick arse.  Well, my nether regions almost liquefied when I saw this project.

As with almost all Tall Building posts, this one is in Dubai in UAE.  If it were built right now, it'd be the second tallest building in the world (second to Burj Dubai) standing at an insane 655 meters (2,150 feet).  It has some seriously unique features.  Don't believe me?  Check it.  This is the Anara Tower.

anara_3.jpgJigga-whaaaaaat

Designed by British architecture firm Atkins - whose work we saw in The Lighthouse (Dubai) - this monster will have 125 stories, one of which will be HAWT action's once this building is completed.

Let's take a look, shall we?

United Arab Emirates isn't the only place throwing their oil money into construction.  I mean, look at the mile-high tower in Canada.  Check out the 200-story tower shooting up in Mexico.  Wait... a... minute.... Those aren't true.  No one uses their cash like the city of Dubai does.

Russians have been flaunting their oil money a bit, but mainly individuals, and mainly on real estate outside of Russia.  But now Russia's using their petrol money to build something on their soil.  (If they do it 200 times over, they'll match Dubai.)  HAWTaction readers, I present, the Okhta Tower:

gazprom_2.jpgI've received criticism over using the term "oil-money" with regards to the construction in Dubai ("There is other business in UAE, John!"), but this is squarely pegged to oil money.  How do I know?  That's the Okhta Tower, the future headquarters of Gazprom.  Gazprom is the largest company in Russia, the third largest corporation on the planet.  It is the largest extractor of natural gas in the world.  That, my friends, is oil money.

These corporate headquarters are planned in St. Petersburg, Russia, but building it might change the entire city... way beyond a simple, gas-flame-shaped tower.  This is a key example of how a Tall Building can impact a city.

By far, the most popular post on HAWTaction is the first Tall Building post: Tall Building: The Burj Dubai.... in Dubai.  By far.  I guess there is a global curiosity about the tallest structure in the world.  How could there not be?

Well, step aside Burj Dubai, because the city of Dubai is about to steal... the city of Dubai's thunder with the Nakheel Harbour and Tower.  While the Burj Dubai's final height is unknown, it is expected to be around 818 meters (2,684 feet).  They could possible stretch it an additional few meters with their antenna.  No matter how many meters they squeeze out of it, though, it's got nothing on this new Nakheel Harbour and Tower.  This sucker's going to be over a kilometer tall.  Over 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) tall.

1-km-2.jpgHoly.  Moly.

That beast will stretch almost 20% taller than the Burj Dubai.  Let me put it another way.  If you stack two Empire State Buildings on two Statue of Liberties to juuuuust hit the height of the Nakheel Tower.  Two Empire State Buildings and two Statue of Liberties for 1 Nakheel Tower.

Holy moly.

There was a buzz about HAWTaction when Tall Buildings covered The Lighthouse (Dubai).  Its architect, Atkins Architects in London, have really embraced sassy and "green" design.  Well, as beautiful as the The Lighthouse (Dubai) is, it's getting eclipsed by another one of their projects: the Bahrain World Trade Center.

We have seen a rich variety of Tall Building posts, from spinning towers to spherical hotels.  Totally sassy.  We haven't seen anything like this, though.  This is the Sinosteel International Plaza, also called the Honeycomb Skyscraper.

sinosteel-international-plaza-by-mad-animation2.jpgHoly smoothness.  This is coming to Detroit, Michigan in 2012.  Designed by the architecture company MAD, it is made of two towers, a 358 meter office tower (1,174 feet) and a smaller 88 meter hotel (289 feet).  Both have a revolutionary external honeycomb structure that provides such strength, the building requires no internal support structure.

Wait... did I say Detroit?  I meant Tianjin, China.

We have visited the Burj Dubai as the first Tall Building post: Tall Building: Burj Dubai... in Dubai.  We have revisited progress on the building with Tall Building: Burj Dubai... in Dubai (Revisited).  Now, our little baby's grown up.  It's weeks away from reaching it's final peak, and there are a new crop of photos.  Read the links above, then zip through these amazing pics.

burj_dubai_07104.jpgThose buildings next to the Burj Dubai?  They are plenty tall in their own right, but they look like lego projects next to this true monster.

Oh, there's more.

I've actually received emails asking about this building.  Obviously, I was going to cover this beauty, but the requests has sped up its delivery to you.  Rem Koolhaas (@ the firm OMA) is one of those rare architects who has transferred over to pop culture.  He was in Time's top 100 of The World's Most Influential People in 2008, and he's collected a handful of architecture awards, including the prestigious Pritzker in 2000.  Why?  Because he can design a building that'll melt your mind.  This is the Central Chinese Television (CCTV) Tower in China.

cctv nightview_final_451x329x90.jpgIt's hard to appreciate this building from one angle, so here's another one.

What happens when you use broadcasting towers to transmit digital TV signals, but then buildings keep going up that are taller than your transmitter?  Well, people don't get their TV, and that makes them mad.  If you're in the U.S., the government would tell you to shove off and call a cable company.  In Tokyo, they build their Sky Tree.

tower1.jpgTo guarantee the broadcast from this tower hits all of Tokyo, they decided to make it the second largest building in the world at 2,000 feet (610 meters).  The only thing that could bother this guy is if the Burj Dubai grows legs and walks across Asia to snuggle.  Well, that or... Godzilla.

The most popular post on HAWTaction, by far, is a post from December, 2007.  The sixth post ever on this blog, it was the first in the Tall Building series, Tall Building: The Burj Dubai... in Dubai, has been the landing pad for thousands of visitors.  It's time for us to revisit it.

Burj Dubai - mid construction.jpgThe first post focused on the building boom in Dubai.  So, here is the second Tall Building post for the Burj Dubai, more in the manner to which you Tall Building readers have become accustomed.

Once again, we go to Dubai... because almost sassy construction is happening in Dubai.  This one's designed by Zaha Hadid, in her first Tall Building post, though she has made an appearance with Dubai's Opera House.  (I'm sure we'll see much more of her on HAWT.)  Well, once again, the money bags in Dubai have called out one of the world's greatest architects and said, "Build us something mind bending."  Hadid responded with the Dancing Towers.

1220_051109_creekview_day.jpgI know.  I know.  NOW you want to join the HAWT field trip to Dubai.  How about some info about this beauty?

We're debating renaming the Tall Building series "Buildings in Dubai" because it seems almost all sassy buildings are going up there.  Oh, Dubai... what you will look in forty years when we're all driving around in nuclear powered cars?  Dubai's going to be one crazy ghost town.

Now, onto the building.  It's, hands down, the most innovative building we've ever highlighted on Tall Building.  This project has even been making mainstream news, such is its sass!  HAWT readers, I present the Dynamic Tower, coming to Dubai:

dynamictop494.jpgThis is not three buildings on sequential blocks.  That is the same building.  Designed by Italian architect David Fisher, this building has floors that rotate independently.  The building will constantly be changing shape.  It'll be a major accomplishment if Fisher just stopped there with the sass.  A building where floors rotate independently isn't enough innovation?  That's just the beginning.

We're back at construction central, billionaire playground: Dubai.  Scan that Tall Buildings list above, and you still won't see anything like this.  These are the Dubai Towers... in Dubai.

DubaiTowers2.jpgIt will be a dizzy little addition to "The Lagoons" business district.  Designed by Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback and Associates, these four towers will be completed in mid 2010.

Is it just me, or do you also want to sit in that little water inlet and stare up at these guys?  My lordie.

Anglophones will call this The Lighthouse, but the Frenchies will call it Le Phare, which means... building or something, in French.  Like the Tall Building Lighthouse in Dubai, the Parisian lighthouse is also a "low carbon" project, and we here at HAWT <3 that.  This is Le Phare.

6-le-phare.jpgThat.  Is.  Sassy.

Atkins_Lighthouse_dubai.jpgBuilding is cruising along at break-neck speed in Dubai, and since they are flush with petroleum cash, there isn't much focus on the ol' "green" projects to save money or help the environment.  Well, I present the Lighthouse, Dubai.  (I say Dubai because there's a Lighthouse skyscraper coming to Paris, and HAWTaction soon enough.)

Sitting at a comfortable 1,300 feet (400 meters), this tall building sits 66 stories high of sassy office space.  But architect Atkins didn't just let these 1.5 million square feet (140,000 square meters) become carbon sinks most towers are in Dubai: it will consumer 65% less energy than comparable buildings and 40% less water.  Thems some numbers!

Tall Building has looked at office buildings and hotels, but never has the spotlight been turned on a residence.  That because there's never been a house like the one being built for Mukesh Ambani's in Mumbai.  Ambani's worth $46 billion and he's decided to build a $2 billion family pad.  This is his home-to-be: Antilla.

I'm way into big buildings.  They do a lot more for a city's character and future than most people recognize.  So, I think it's HAWTaction [hot ak-shuhn] to keep tabs on new projects like the Nakheel Harbour and Tower, Bahrain WTC, Honeycomb SkyscraperBurj Dubai... in Dubai... in Pictures, CCTV and TVCC Towers, Tokyo Sky Tree, Burj Dubai (Revisited), Dancing Towers, Dynamic Tower, Dubai Towers, The Lighthouse (Paris), The Lighthouse (Dubai), Antilla, London's Super Tower, Eiffel Tower, Shuffle Tower, Full Moon, Caspian Bay, Chicago Spire, Chicago's Aqua Tower, Infinity Tower, Teardrop, Christmas Tree or the Burj Dubai.

Tall Building has looked at classics and it has looked at works-in-progress.  It's time, now, to look at an architectural dream, with slight chances of coming to light.  This post takes us to London and the proposed Super Tower, a city unto itself.

popularchitecture-the_tower.jpgIt is so drastic and dramatic that it doesn't really make sense.  Then you read about it, and you realize it barely makes sense.  The tower hits 1,500 meters, almost 3/4 of a mile upwards.  That's almost 5,000 feet up.  Wha?

UPDATE: These plans are not accurate.  Brought to our attention by reader Dan in London, further investigation revealed that the Eiffel Tower Management company has said, "This is a hoax. We have no idea where this came from. The whole thing is preposterous."  The designer, Serero Architects, announced, "Our project for a the temporary extension of the Eiffel tower is an unsolicited proposal to the Eiffel Tower management company. We are confirming that the SETE did not organized a competition on this topic, in contrary with what was announced in the press. This project has been a victim of disinformation (notably by the article published in The Guardian) which contributed to discredit our proposal. Many blogs [oops] and daily newspapers did present wrongly the project as the winner of a competition organized and approved by the Société d’exploitation de la Tour Eiffel."  The HAWT post is still fun, so enjoy.

This post takes us to one of the original Tall Buildings: The Eiffel Tower.  I'm writing to inform that there is an exact replica of this tower in Las Vegas which is equally enchanting and authentic and MUCH more convenient for we U.S. folk.  Warning, though, the Las Vegas one could dissolve upon contact with water.  Who-haw!

No, this post is addressing original Eiffel Tower in Paris that is turning 120 next year.  To celebrate this rather random anniversary, Paris held a design contest to find the best plans to... well... change the very tower that is being honored.  (Yes, I also found it odd.)  The winning design belonged to the French company Serero Architects.  Behold what will be the new, 120-year-old Eiffel Tower (sunset extra):

Honestly?  The insane building in Dubai is just not slowing down.  (There's a list of projects covered on HAWTaction at the end of this post.)  It's so much fun when people have billions of dollars in oil money!  Look at how they entertain us with their construction projects!

I introduce the Shuffle Tower, designed by James Law Cybertecture:

(THAT many Tall Building posts?  Whooooo-haw!)

This Tall Building post takes us to two projects in Baku, Azerbaijan,  Both inspired by the moon.  Azerbaijan?  Yes.... Azerbaijan.  The moon?  Yes....  The moon.

The Full Moon

1357FullMoonRising_pic1.jpgThat is one sassy building.  (Though only 35 stories tall, it can still be considered a Tall Building at HAWTaction.)  Internal space is a massive 104 thousand square meters (1.1 million square feet).  What is in that giant space?  A hotel with 382 rooms.  Holy.  Moly.  Thems is some seriously large rooms!

The design is something.  It looks like the moon/Death Star above, but check out another angle:

As I promised, this installment of Tall Building is not in Dubai or Chicago.  In fact, I've got two of 'em for you.  Enjoy.

The Teardrop, coming 2016.  South Korea.

Korea's Yongsan.jpgSeoul is throwing $31 billion (yes, that's a lot of money) into its Yongsan business district to build... well... the future.  Essentially, in 8 years, this part of Seoul will look like a sci fi set.  Details on the complex are sparse, but I count over 20 buildings crouching under the giant teardrop that will hit 152 stories and be one of the tallest buildings in the world.  There are no names for the buildings, yet, but the big one's been nicknamed "The Teardrop," which seems appropriate.  That is some skyline.  My lordie.  Get the bulldozers over there already.

Tall Building: Infinity Tower

060608som.jpgLooooook at that beauty.  Now, granted we've seen spinning torsos from Calatrava, but a full, 90 degree turn?  Ladies and gentlemen, I present the Infinity Tower, another marvel coming to the city of Dubai.

Aqua.jpgNow, THAT's what I'm talking about.  Again, this series, Tall Building, aims to highlight sassy construction.  It's easy to put up a glass rectangle or a brick block with some windows in it, so when a developer spends the time to hire an architect and says, "Make it sassy," I bow down.

This building, the Aqua Tower, takes us back to Chicago, and it's sassy as all get out.  I mean, look at that thing!  Construction broke almost a year ago and will completed next year, bringing 1.9 million square feet to Chicago.  The breakdown: 210 hotels rooms (floors 1-18), 476 rental residential units (floors 19-52), and 263 condominium units & penthouses (floors 53-80).

I want to let you know that sales have started one of the sassiest buildings in the world: The Chicago Spire.  This building was designed by my favorite architect, the Spaniard Santiago Calatrava, and he's HAWTaction [hot ak-shuhn].

Burj Dubai - mid construction.jpg I want to check in with the largest structure in the world: Burj Dubai, and what this project means to Dubai.  I started summarizing what is in the building (i.e., hotels, apartments), but I found a video that does it much more efficiently.  AND, you know what they say?  Video's worth... like... 30,000 words a second.  So, check this video out, and then realize what your oil money's doing for you.

I particularly like how the millions of square feet in this building aren't enough and the developers are planning the world's largest shopping mall and 30,000 homes at the building's base.  Holy moly.  Also interesting to note: that is definitely a desert.
